Compact: Industry keeps on backing out of Liabilty and Redress

In Bonn, 2008, efforts to set up a binding Liability and Redress system under the Carthagena Protocol to deal with damage to the biological diversity caused by GMos were derailed by industry's proposal Compact. Instead of coming to decision the negotiations were postponed further, with two additional meeting before the next MOP in Japan in 2010.
Just in time before the first of these meetings at the end of February, the biotech industries offered a revised vision, but - as expected - nothing has been improved.

Cartagena Protocol: Still no liability regime

[img_assist|nid=216|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=100|height=43]The Fourth Meeting of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety took place on 12-16 May in Bonn, Germany. The Cartagena Protocol sets rules for the international trade with living modified organisms (LMOs). Finalizing a Liability and Redress system was on the agenda for this meeting, after negotiations on this topic had been going on for several years.

[img_assist|nid=216|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=100|height=43]De vierde bijeenkomst van het Cartagena Protocol voor Bioveiligheid vond plaats in Bonn (Duitsland) van 12 tot 16 mei. Het Cartagena Protocol stelt regels op voor de internationale handel in levende gemodificeerde organismen (LGOs). Op de agenda voor deze bijeenkomst stond de voltooiing van het systeem voor Aansprakelijkheid en Schadevergoeding, waarover al enkele jaren onderhandeld is.
